Why You Should Take Your Kids Windsurfing

Windsurfing might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you’re planning a family vacation, but that’s what makes it such a good idea. It’s a fun experience that you and your kids will remember forever, and you might even walk away with a new lifelong hobby!

So as you’re planning your next vacation, consider windsurfing. Here’s why a windsurfing vacation is the perfect family activity and how to plan for it. Here’s to your best vacation yet!

A Family Vacation in St Pete Beach

St. Pete Beach has something for everyone. The beach is beautiful and perfect for families, there are hotels for all occasions, and there are lots of delicious places to eat! You’ll have plenty to do after your windsurfing lessons, whether that includes relaxing or exploring Fort DeSoto.

We’ve already written about our favorite places to stay, where to eat, and what to do in St. Pete Beach, so read our recommendations before planning your vacation!

Can Kids Go Windsurfing Safely?

Your family probably span decades and skill levels, so can you all go windsurfing together? The main requirement is that you be comfortable in the water and be able to swim ( though some of our lessons take place in water only a few feet deep). We can provide life jackets if requested for you and your little ones!

How old your child needs to be to learn how to windsurf depends on the child themselves. Kids as young as 4 can start windsurfing, but it’s best for children to be 8 years or older and a least 60 pounds. While we will provide equipment appropriate for their size, they need to be able to handle the sails!

Windsurfing is Fun for the Whole Family

So what about you—do you need to be athletic to be able to windsurf? The answer is no! You may be nervous, but our students say windsurfing is never as scary as they imagined. Rather than needing a lot of strength, we emphasize technique and balance. We’ll also equip you and your family with beginner equipment that are basically foolproof.

And if you’re worried, take a look at our tips for beginner windsurfers. Remember, we’ll be there with you every step of the way, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how well you do by the end of the lesson!

Be Prepared for a Day at the Beach

Sunscreen, water, and proper clothes are the most important things to have during your windsurfing lessons. It’s essential to reapply sunscreen often—the sun can be sneaky, and no one wants to be the lobster colored tourist!

Take a look at our list of the 5 things we always bring to the beach, and besides the essentials, you’ll see we like to bring a GoPro, too! Put it in a waterproof case and document your windsurfing lessons as it happens. You’ll be able to look back at the memories (and inevitable falls) for years to come.

And if you’re looking for a slower change of pace, we rent out paddle boards, too! We’ll show you how to use them, and bring them to wherever you are.

Plan your St. Pete Beach vacation and book your windsurfing lesson now. Have fun!
